| Adipositas III. | > 40 | > 130 kg |
Gastric Banding
The surgical use of a silicone band which is put around the stomach (gastric banding) serves to reduce the intake of food. The surgery has no influence on the anatomy of the stomach.
The patient himself is highly responsible for the success or failure of this operative therapy. Gastric Banding offers a great opportunity for a lasting weight reduction, if certain rules are observed.
The silicone band is inserted through five small (1 2 cm long) skin incisions, and put around the inlet of the stomach, by which the intake of food is highly restricted. Thus, a small pouch with a capacity of 20 ml is created, leaving the rest of the stomach fully functioning.
