Clinic for Geriatrics
The Clinic for Geriatrics offers treatment for acute and chronic diseases of old and very old patients. This does not depend on the actual age of the patient.
Apart from the treatment of acute symptoms, our most important aim is to restore a maximum of the patient's ability to master everyday life, thus giving him back his independence.
Apart from medical diagnostics administered by doctors (laboratory diagnostics, computer-assisted diagnostics including modern imaging methods), a complete examination of bodily, mental and psychological functions is required. The results of this geriatric assesment are the basis for an individual therapeutical plan. In questions of individual problems the department of geriatrics works together with all other medical branches, keeping an especially close cooperation with the department of neurology (early rehabilitation, stroke, Parkinson).
Our employees of the department of geriatrics have special knowledge in questions of early rehabilitation. There exists a close cooperation between our clinic and the Reha-Zentrum Reuterstrasse in Bergisch Gladbach, a geriatric rehabilitation and day care center..
The team for the treatment of geriatric diseases includes, apart from medical specialists, specially examined nurses, physiotherapists, ergotherapists, social education workers and speech therapists. A social worker, a nutritionist and a clergy-man participate in the team-conference. Furthermore, we maintain a regular exchange with the Psychological Service.
Our employees at the Clinic for Geriatrics consider their work as a special duty and responsibility towards elderly patients who are in a difficult situation. The recovery of a maximum of independence in everyday life is a main goal.
Therefore, we value a good communication with the patient and his family. The motto of the Clinic for Geriatrics at Marien-Krankenhaus is a therapeutical scheme considering the whole (of the) body. Apart from the weekly team conference (interdisciplinary exchange between all specialists involved in the therapy) we focus on topics as e.g. cases in the scope of ethic discussion, which are important for an individual and integral therapy of the patient.
A patient can be admitted to the hospital by his family physician, by the emergency ward (department of urgent surgery) of the Marien-Krankenhaus, or by transfer from other medical departments or hospitals.
Information on registration is available with Christiane Griess and Birgit Meid.
